Publisher's deep violet-blue cloth, front cover with wide gilt border of floral and vine design, spine with gilt-stamped title and bordered with aldus leaf. Binding designed by Edward B. Edwards with his monogram. The aldus leaf pattern is continued to border each page with text. Bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even toning. Moderate shelf handling wear. Spine is mildly toned. Gift inscription on the first blank page. 8vo; 8.5 inches tall; 5 p. l., 5-69, [1] p. 4 mounted col. pl. (incl. front.) 22 cm. First Illustrated Edition. Background Information: Among his popular inspirational writings is the Christmas story The Other Wise Man (1896). As President Wilson's ambassador to the Netherlands from 1913, Van Dyke was a first-hand witness to the outbreak of World War I and its progress, and was a key player in the President's diplomatic efforts to keep the U.S. out of the conflict.
