Hardcover. Condition: VG. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Photos, Map e/papers (illustrator). 1st. Tales by Ion Idriess, usually based on his experiences throughout the Out Back and in remote areas, have become an Aussie literary legend. Not only were his book prolific but his travels and experiences described in them were as varied as the places visited. "The Tin Scratchers" is set in the far noth of Queensland. The author arrived there to try his hand at tin mining in the early 1900s, when still in his teens, or just out of them. The fortune hunting bug had captured him and the "Scratchers," like so many of his texts bring clarity to the contitions in which these pioneer prospectors/miners, and thousands of others, experienced in areas ranging from jungle to near desert. His portrayal of the "cobbers" he worked with are forceful reminders of the dinkum Aussies who pushed out to new boundaries as pioneers and Australia's frontiersmen. For those reasons alone, Ion Idriess books are a vital, down-to-earth complement to Australia's formal, academic histories. Persistant popularity of his writing is proof of that. First edition of 1959, 260 pages, illustrated with 31 b/w photos, end-paper maps. Brown hard covers are VG with silver spine titles plus a silver compass decoration lower front corner. This copy from a lending library and the use of the FFEP map as a replacement issue sheet, with about a dozen date lines, is an iadverse factor of the boo,k. There are no further library marks through the text or at the back pages and the text block is VG with an occasional small mark. The art DJ is VG, plastic protected and while the background to the front panel may be slightly faded the figures etc retain their colour. The jacket has been secured to the paste-downs with browned tape.
