[.] Including a visit to the tea, silk, and cotton countries; with an account of the agriculture and horticulture of the Chinese, new plants, etc. Second edition, very good condition and very scarce. Cloth-bound boards with gilt illustration and engravings on the cover, with gilt title on spine. Wear and cracking around the edges and corners of the cover, and some denting at top and bottom of spine; all of which is expected with its age. Light cracking at the top of front end-paper. Spine is not the original, has been professionally replaced. Pages are clean and unmarked; includes 3 tinted lithographed plates and numerous other b/w illustrations, including an illustrated title page. Travels between 1843 and 1845 in Kuangtung, Fukien, the Chekiang coast, and Shanghai. Robert Fortune was a Scottish botanist, plant hunter and traveller, known for introducing around 250 new ornamental plants, mainly from China, but also Japan, into the gardens of Britain, Australia and the USA. He also played a role in development of the tea industry in India in the 19th century. Seller Inventory # 036367
