Second edition. Full leather by Hayday, with five raised bands and gilt titling to spine, inner gilt dentelles, and all edges gilt. Marbled endpapapers. Frontispiece lithograph of a library with a quotation from Wordsworth. 24.5 × 18.5cm, 656pp. A fine collection of quotations and thoughts on all manner of subjects, arranged alphabetically by subject. The author, Henry Southgate (1818-1888) was a London auctioneer and who became known as an anthologist and compiler. This copy has a previous owner's name to the title page, Broomhead Colton-Fox, who was a well known solicitor and was killed by a passing train when crossing the line at Victoria Station on December 15th 1893. Condition: The leather is scuffed to the spine, joints and board edges , and there is a bit of scratching to the gilt pages edges but the contents are in very good condition, bar some foxing to the prelims. **PLEASE NOTE: As this is a heavy book, postage may have to be increased for overseas (non-UK) buyers, or decreased where appropriate.
