James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879) was the first professor of experimental physics at Cambridge and contributed papers to the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His essay on 'Saturn's Rings' gained him the Adams Prize in 1857. His best-known researches dealt with electricity and magnetism. His 'Theory of Heat' was first published by Longmans Green & Co., London, in 1871. For sale is a new impression from 1899, with corrections and additions (1891) by Lord Rayleigh, and is part of the publisher's 'Text-Books of Science' series. The book is bound in the original black cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and blind stamped emblem on both boards and a blind series stamp on the front board. The case of the book is in good to very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and light staining on the boards. There is splitting to the cloth on the top 1 1/2" and a further split of about 3/4" on the front spine edge and a split of about 1" on the bottom of the rear spine edge. The corners are lightly bumped and there is heavier bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing on the 2-page list of other volumes in the series at the start of the book, the half-title page and the last page.
