Single leaf, printed on both sides. Two old horizontal folds. A trifle creased. An apparently unrecorded playbill advertising a performance at the Newcastle Theatre Royal of a production of Tom & Jerry, inspired by Pierce Egan's (1772-1849) popular metropolitan adventure novel, Life in London (London, 1821). The play is verbosely described as the 'classic, comic, operatic, didactic, moralistic, aristophanic, localic, analytic, terpsichoric, panoramic, camera-obscuratic, extravaganza Burletta of Fun, Frolic, Fashion, and Flash.' This particular bill is remarkable for its verso, which is nigh on entirely devoted to intricate descriptions of each of the nineteen scenes, to the extent that, though clearly designed to heighten anticipation, it would leave little to surprise attendees. The year prior, on 19th February, during a performance of the same piece, a fire had broken out at the theatre. Though easily dealt with, the resulting panic led to the deaths of eight audience members who were trampled underfoot whilst evacuating. The event seemingly did little to dissuade theatre-goers, nor indeed managers, from either respectively attending or staging further performances of such a popular play.
