Octavo. (xiii) (1) 460pp. + 2 fold-out maps. 3/4 tan calf over pebbled burgundy cloth board, with gilt, ruling, tooling and lettering on the spine. Edges of the book block in red. Photo-illustrated frontispiece. The work is British General Francis Reginald Wingate's translation of the Father Joseph Ohrwalder's account of capture and imprisonment and subsequent escape during the Mahdist War. The work is illustrated with a few b/w photographic reproductions and drawings. Also includes 2 fold-out maps at the back of the book, one of Omdurman (near Khartoum), measuring 12x15", and the other of the general region of Northern Sudan, measuring 13.5x10". Binding a bit loose, with some abrasions, scratches and water stains to the covers. Cracking and rubbing to the hinges of the spine. Interior with hinges of the spine repaired and re-backed. Some water stains along the bottom of the endpapers, the frontispiece and the title page. Image unaffected. A few small water stains on the index the back. Binding in good-, interior in overall very good condition. Protected by modern mylar. Seller Inventory # 43310
