About this Item
[4], 104pp. With a half-title, a hand-coloured engraved frontispiece, and one further engraved plate (partially naively hand-coloured). Original publisher's green roan-backed marbled paper boards, ruled and lettered in gilt. Rubbed, joints starting, loss to head-cap. Bookseller's ticket of C. Brown of Margate to FEP, naively repaired FFEP partially glued to front pastedown, offsetting to title, scattered spotting. The penultimate edition, published in the year after the first, of four tales for children by novelist and poet Amelia Opie (1769-1853). In the final story, a cousin of the Pemberton's, Merrick, comes to stay. Like one of the Pemberton twins, he intends to become clergyman, with the motive of enjoying a life of hunting and shooting. Lady Pemberton attempts to influence Merrick by providing an account of the exemplary lives of a clergyman and his wife who devoted themselves entirely to their parishioners regardless of their own comfort. Her hopes are however dashed, and she stoically concludes: ' what a blessing it is to children to be well taught.' Darton G728 (2). Size: 12mo. Seller Inventory # AQ27969
