About this Item
The 1849 Gold Rush to California is one of the critical events in the history of the United States. With the exception, perhaps of Mr. Sutter, in whose mill race gold was first discovered, most of its participants are lost in the past and unknown today. Not so Bret Harte, who had only at best a passing familiarity with the gold mining experience having spent most of his early years as a school teacher and Wells Fargo messenger. His tales of the experiences found in the gold camps and towns associated with them solidified his place in history. This 1944 Heritage Press Special Edition (First, Thus) in gold embossed covers with a spine and trailing edge inscribed front and back with the titles, author and illustrator's names is very fine, without marks or damage except for some toning of the front and rear end pages. The publisher provided slip cover is very good with some rubs, bumps and staining but no loose seams or tears. An excellent example. Seller Inventory # 000567
