About this Item
ARAM, Eugene. THE TRIAL AND LIFE OF EUGENE ARAM; SEVERAL OF HIS LETTERS AND POEMS; AND HIS PLAN AND SPECIMENS OF AN ANGLO-CELTIC LEXICON. WITH COPIOUS NOTES AND ILLUSTRATIONS, AND AN ENGRAVED FAC-SIMILE OF THE HANDWRITING OF THIS VERY INGENIOUS BUT ILL-FATED SCHOLAR. Richmon: M. Bell, 1832. 8vo., early blue boards with brown quarter-morocco spine. First Edition. Eugene Aram, a gifted self-educated linguist, was tried August, 1759 at York Assizes for the murder of Daniel Clark in 1745. Aram and a friend, Richard Houseman, had convinced Clark to obtain a great number of valuables on credit. He brought the goods to them, and they led him to a field where Aram murdered and buried. Clark then split the goods with Houseman. The mystery surrounding his crime, which went unpunished for fourteen years, was kept alive through Bulwer-Lytton's novel, Eugene Aram. Good (exterior tape repairs to head and base of spine with front cover bit loose; some occasional spotting in text). $60.00. Seller Inventory # 3007
