About this Item
5pp. Folio. Paper wrappers. British Parliamentary Paper C3400. Signed for Britain by Sir Arthur Gordon. Tonga agrees to grant no other state, rights or priviledges in excess of those accored to Britain. King George and his adviser Rev Shirley Baker sought to acquire international recognition for Tonga and had pleaded in vain for some years for British protection. Baker negotiated a treaty with Germany in 1876 granting rights of trade and the use of Vavau as a naval station. This disturbed Britain and led to the treaty. A clean copy. Seller Inventory # 140109
