About this Item
xxiv,760pp. Large, thick octavo. Green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, pictorial decoration in black. Frontis, plates and illustrations. Inner hinges cracked and with an evident early repair causing an adhesion at the lower edge of the rear endsheet, small bruise at top edge of one board, lower outer joint has a couple of worn patches, occasional foxing and pencil marginalia; still, for this title, a very good, sound copy. First edition, presumed second state of the binding, with the decoration on the upper board stamped in black rather than gilt. Thudichum (1821-1901), a German born and trained physician, immigrated to the UK and became notable as an advocate of wine as a source of health and happiness.
