About this Item
McINTYRE, Joseph S. A TRAVELOG. [Published by the author in 1925]. 8vo., red cloth (library-type binding) with gilt title on spine; unpaginated but a few hundred pages. Only Edition. A personal travelogue by McIntyre, who took his wife and teen-age son, Henry, to Europe and the Mideast early in 1925. The book is comprised of a series of letters that McIntyre sent to the Mexico Ledger in Mexico, Missouri at the request of its editor, Michell White. Illustrated with several photographs & sketches. McIntyre was born in Mexico, Missouri on April 4, 1871 and married Ida Landenberg. Their son, Henry, was born in 1912 and accompanied them on their trip. McIntyre was a Mason and a member of Tuscan Lodge #360. He was Grand Master of Missouri Masons in 1923 and the vice president of the Missouri Masonic Home. He was made Knight Commander in 1917 and coroneted Inspector General Honorary in 1921. Signed presentation from McIntyre to fellow Mason George C. Marquis on a front blank page: "12/25/'25. To Bro. G.C. Marquis, Fraternally, J.S. McIntyre." Marquis was co-owner of the Lexington News in Lexington, Missouri and was a good friend of President Harry S. Truman, also a fellow Mason. Marquis' personal papers are in the Truman Library at Independence, Missouri, with most of the papers relating to the Masonic Order of Missouri, of which Marquis was a high-ranking officer. Truman became a Mason in 1909 and was elected Grand Master of Missouri in 1940. Millions of Americans witnessed his Masonic funeral on national television in 1972. An interesting Masonic-related item and certainly scarce, probably printed in a very limited number as a Christmas gift for friends of McIntyre. Near fine condition ("1907 Boatman's Bank Bldg. St. Louis, Mo." written beneath the presentation in a different hand). $125.00. Seller Inventory # 1615
