FIRST EDITION. 8vo in twelves. 5.25 x 7.75 inches. xviii + [ii] +400 pp. + [8] pp. + [4] pp. publisher's advertisements. Bound in original green cloth, gilt, boards with decorative blind stamped borders. Extremities worn, with staining of rear board, and some foxing, including frontispiece and plate margins, but otherwise a very good copy. Loosely inset: What to see in the Tenby Museum, by Arthur L. Leach, Hon. Curator and Secretary, 1944 (folding pamphlet, [8] pp.) and correspondence between Leach and Mrs Sylvia Lloyd of Aylesbury relating to her late husband's research on wild life in Pembrokeshire 8 letters (7 manuscript and one typed) and 2 stamped postcards, all dated 1945-46 ). (Freeman, 67a). Illustrated by 24 chromolithograph plates (4 partly coloured), including frontispiece. Written in the form of letters, this book is based on a family holiday spent in the area of Tenby where Gosse examined the life of the rock pools. It is an unusual blend of commentary on the Pembrokeshire countryside with scientific observations on marine natural history, including sea urchins, sponges and sea anemones. Philip Henry Gosse (1810-88), elected F.R.S. 1856, was a naturalist, marine biologist, pioneer of the sea water aquarium, and a prolific writer of popular and educational books. First edition with fine chromolithograph plates. This copy contains numerous insertions written by Arthur Leach, Curator of Tenby Museum, 1944-46. (Freeman and Wertheimer, Gosse Bibliography, 67-68).
