About this Item
viii+110 pp. (no half-title, none issued?). Textblock very good, only flaws being very early ink sig. of 'Penelope Compton' top t.p. and browned edges to endpapers off-set from binding adhesive as common for books of this period; boards very professionally re-attached with new gilt title label to panelled spine, spine ends a little rubbed, all surfaces a little rubbed and worn but this par for the course given age, central regions lighter perhaps due to shelving alongside smaller books, faint cup-ring to back, gilt dentelles remain on edges where unworn. fr. pastedown has large engraved Lindesay heraldic plate with motto, facing fr.endpaper has smaller bookplate of the famous Bibiotheca Lindesiana library, no Latin motto but 'Endure Forte' at top, crests differ, latter having swan rising from crown-topped helmet (apparently the 1900 version), former a large crown or coronet, I cannot identify Penelope Crompton, although a Lady Crompton is mentioned in Marquess of Townsend mss. in a letter of July 5th 1735. Originally published under the auspices of the author's brother David Fordyce in 1755 Belfast and London editions were later issued in 1759, the latter also given as the 2nd edition. This has the informal dedication to Philip and Richard Hollingworth. It should be noted that an apparent leaf-stub before the Preface is present in other copies and does not signify any removal, Roman pagination including t.p. The contents comprise a symbolic utopian vision of a covertly masonic nature, reflecting the author's connection with Scottish freemasonry ? All editions very scarce. Seller Inventory # 005568
