About this Item
Mary Louisa Molesworth, née Stewart (1839 ¿ 1921) was an English writer of children's stories who wrote for children under the name of Mrs Molesworth. She typified late Victorian writing for girls. Aimed at girls too old for fairies and princesses but too young for Austen and the Brontës, books by Molesworth had their share of amusement, but they also had a good deal of moral instruction. The girls reading Molesworth would grow up to be mothers; thus, the books emphasized Victorian notions of duty and self-sacrifice. Hardcover has tan cloth boards with B&W illustrations on front and spine with lettering in black and gold, but no DJ. Top page-edge tinted red. Interior is tight, clean and text is unmarked. POS on ffep with penciled numbers on front paste-down. Brentano's of New York booksellers sticker on rear paste-down. Very Good plus condition. Several factors make this a unique collectors book. This copy was published by the American publisher, E. P. Dutton. No date of publication nor copyright info found. However, the final page of the text says "Edinburgh: Printed by W. & R. Chambers, Limited." The 1891 date is one some other sellers used for this work when printed in England and is probably slightly earlier than when this volume was produced. Nonetheless, it appears this book is well over 100 years old. This may be a 1st American edition, but I can not verify. An additional mystery arises regarding the illustrator. The cover states "Illustrated by Lewis Baumer" (I presume this refers to the famed illustrator of the English "Punch" magazine), yet the title page states the illustrator is A. S. Boyd. The link illustrations in this copy are signed A. S. Boyd. Of course there is no ISBN, LCCN nor MSR. Seller Inventory # 007030
