About this Item
7 5/8" x 9 7/8", pictorial paper-covered boards with chromolithographed color illustration to front, monochrome blue illustr. to back, red cloth spine (original), unpaginated (approx. 200 pp.), illustrated endpapers. 'St. Nicholas Series' designated on front board. Illustrated children's storybook circa 1901 consisting of engravings and short stories. Having had many Donohue children's books of this period, this an extraordinary large volume: 200 pages or so. Charming color frontis of boy and girl in the snow (with a bit of foxing and two smaller light blue stains). Externally good (see photo enlarged) with the gilt-outlined cover illustration intact and just the usual wear to the edges and corners (corners rounded) and some surface soiling/darkening. Rear board is more soiled and a bit tattered at the edge abutting the spine. Binding is quite sound. Interior leaves are free from writing or other marks, as are the endpapers, though the title page has a small blue stain at the gutter mirroring that on the frontis previously mentioned. Otherwise, only age-toning to the leaves (browning from age) is a condition issue. Illustrated endpapers with very interesting (and odd) design: each e.p. has 4 Mother Rabbit figures bordering a 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" panel from the 'Foxy Grandpa' comic strip (a 1900-1917 comic strip now sought by collectors), a different panel on each e.p., with the subject of Grandpa playing football. Ships in a box. Seller Inventory # 04427
