Most copies were heavily used so this is a rare survivor. John Mason (c. 1646 1694) was an English nonconformist clergyman and hymn writer. Little is known about his life, but he is remembered for his contributions to hymnody. In 1683, he published a collection of hymns titled "Songs of Praise, composed of Divine Poems and Ejaculations." One of his most well-known hymns is "How Sweet and Awful Is the Place," which reflects themes of divine worship and the reverence of God's presence. Mason's hymns were characterized by a deep piety and a focus on personal devotion. While his hymns may not be as widely known today, they were influential in shaping the hymn tradition in the late 17th century Bound in full contemporary leather.
