This book is "Speak Out! Speeches, Open Letters , Commentaries" by Günter Grass. It was translated by Ralph Manheim, and has an Introduction by Michael Harrington. Published in 1969 by Harcourt, Brace & World in hardcover format. OP *************************************** From the dust-jacket blurb : " Günter Grass entered the political arena in 1965, when he delivered 52 election speeches throughout Germany in praise of democracy, the Social Democratic Party, and Willy Brandt. Born in Danzig in 1927, forced to be one of Germany's soldiers at sixteen, and an American prisoner of war at 17, Günter Grass extends his political commitment beyond his literary work, His is the unprecedented effort on the part of a German writer to use his fame in what he considers the best interests of the nation, speaking out on all current issues, and fighting, in a country without deeply rooted democratic traditions, for the processes of parliamentary democracy. The texts include two of his election speeches, speeches on student violence, on the Czechoslovakian crisis, open letters to political figures, and political commentaries." **************************************** CONTENTS : Editorial Note / Introduction / List of Abbreviations / The Issue / Song in Praise of Willy / On the Self-Evident / On Writers as Court Jesters and on Non-existent Courts / Speech to a Young Voter Who Feels Tempted to Vote for the N.
