About this Item
Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Sheet measures 22 3/4 x 28 1/4 inches. Philadelphia: 1818. Large scale polar projection showing a vast icy sea surrounded by neighbors before Antarctica is known. Beautifully colored and careful detail of the surrounding geography. Camelepardulis (giraffes) noted in South Africa. Stains and chips to margins, with repairs to the upper and lower margin. Otherwise in good condition. John Pinkerton (1758-1826) was a prominent English mapmaker known for his large and impeccably detailed maps. In this manner, his work marks a turning point from the earlier emphasis on decoration toward a greater emphasis on information. His "Modern Atlas" is one of the best British atlases of the period and is a fine example of his work. Rare American edition. Seller Inventory # 309436
