Second separate edition (first published in a separate format with these illustrations in 1864 by James G. Gregory). Original brown beveled cloth with fancy gilt lettering and borders on front cover. Chromolithographic frontispiece and half-title and four additional full-page chromolithographic illustrations, which are delicately and beautifully colored. The colored half-title was redone with the publisher's imprint changed to read Hurd & Houghton, so the two editions are not entirely identical. Condition overall about very good, a clean copy. Small tear at base of spine, front hinge neatly tightened, ink stamp or very neat hand lettering on first blank (first page after the endpaper) reading "Newman Reading Club," collector's pencil note on front flyleaf.
