About this Item
Advertising postcard of the menswear store which eventually became the largest department store in Sydney, and in the world, at 52 acres of retail space. The retailing giant was first established by an English immigrant, Anthony Hordern; the family eventually opened a 6 story building called The Palace Emporium, with an entrance built of Italian marble. Imposing image of the A & A Hordern building at 695 - 697 George Street, with its distinctive curved facade. Goods neatly displayed in the ground floor windows, as women shoppers stand in the arcade. Divided back, posted, with two 1d NSW stamps, postmarked 1908, addressed to Tacoma Washington. The writer, (perhaps owner) states, "The photograph is the front of the new premises. So far it is doing well. I expect great things". Printed b&w photograph. Slightly rubbed at corners. 3 3/4 x 5 1/4". Seller Inventory # 21078
