About this Item
8vo (22.5 cm), 192 pp, plates. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (small tears to dj). Sir Hans Sloane's claim to fame is that his collection of books, manuscripts and natural history specimens were the foundation of the British Museum. In order that Sloane's collection might be safeguarded for the general use and benefit of the public, he devised in his will a new type of institution. It came into being in 1753, in which year Sloane died and his collections were acquired by Parliament and together with the Cottonian and Harleian manuscripts, formed into the British Museum.
