original red cloth, mounted cover illustration. First edition of this "instant disaster book" memorializing the Titanic tragedy, illustrated with numerous in-text line cuts and 15 photographic plates. "The world has never let the night of April 14, 1912, pass into oblivion. It remains an incredible story-a colossal confluence of bad luck, bad timing and bad navigation. 'This volume is one of many "instant books" inexpensively produced and sold by subscription shortly after the luxury liner sank. "Modeled after those produced after the great Galveston hurricane in 1900," these books, also known as "dollar books" because of their price, often generated money to help the disaster's victims; for example, "proceeds from [this title's] sale in Boston were apparently given to the Boston American Titanic Relief Fund" (Jay White). Includes the introductory essay "Women and Children First!" by Henry van Dyke, author, professor and clergyman; this essay, slightly revised, was published many times under the title "Spiritual Consolation to the Survivors of the Titanic." Profusely illustrated with charts, contemporary editorial cartoons and historic photographs. Light edge-wear and faint toning to spine. An attractive, vg+ copy. Previous owner name on ffep.
