"A Shropshire Lad" is a collection of 63 poems by the English poet Alfred Edward Housman. Set in the semi-imaginary pastoral Shropshire, Housman's verse ponders the helplessness of man, the fragility of life, and the terrible effects of war, all against the background of an achingly beautiful countryside. Throughout the years, the strong combination of emotional feeling, lyricism, and folk qualities contributed to the popularity of "A Shropshire Lad" with composers. The sweeping themes of youth and love have found their way into the canon of English folksong and have been set to music by such composers as George Butterworth, John Ireland, and Ralph Vaughan Williams.
