About this Item
The author follows a little twelve year-old girl, in 1697, who calls the rock of Quebec, home. She doesn't feel the isolation of many of the settlers, but enjoys Governor Frontenac as he entertains children in his palace. As Cather follows this devout and resourceful child over the course of a year, she re-creates the continent as it must have appeared to its first European inhabitants. 280 pages. Willa Sibert Cather (born Wilella Sibert Cather; 1873?1947) was an American writer known for her novels of life on the Great Plains. She was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for One of Ours, a novel set during World War I. Cather achieved recognition as a novelist of the frontier and pioneer experience. She wrote of the spirit of those settlers moving into the western states, many of them European immigrants in the nineteenth century. Common themes in her work include nostalgia and exile. A sense of place is an important element in Cather's fiction: physical landscapes and domestic spaces are for Cather dynamic presences against which her characters struggle and find community. Hardcover has light green cloth boards with paper sticker title/autor pasted spine and front. No DJ. Interior is clean and unmarked, but front hinge broken and pasted on front end-paper is the poem "Poor Marty" by Wila Cather (reprinted from "The Atlantic Monthly"?). Copyright 1931.
