About this Item
Nd. A curious unattributed date and publisher. Possibly an early Dublin printing from early 1800s.? Full calf. Original title lacking on spine, but in panel below a handwritten title on white paper. Top of spine nicked. Two volumes bound together. Vol 1: Lacks pp 1-6. Advertisement on page 6. Followed by pp. 7 - 120. Vol 2: lacks pp. 1-4. pp. 5 - 132 The novel can be seen as an epilogue to the possibly unfinished work The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, and also as an answer to Tobias Smollett's decidedly unsentimental Travels through France and Italy. Sterne had met Smollett during his travels in Europe, and strongly objected to his spleen, acerbity and quarrelsomeness. He modelled the character of Smelfungus on him. The novel was extremely popular and influential and helped establish travel writing as the dominant genre of the second half of the 18th century. Seller Inventory # ABE-1692619128460
