About this Item
1993 Dentsu (Tokyo, Japan), in a custom paper-covered card folder with cloth ties, twelve 8 3/4 x 22 3/8 inches tall color prints mounted on 10 1/4 x 24 inches tall stock, with translucent tissue guards containing Japanese and English descriptions of each work, plus a 10 x 9 inches tall folding pamphlet introducing the set in Japanese and English. Printed label in Japanese and English to front of folder. A near fine set. Note that this is a heavy and oversized set, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. Rare; OCLC (No. 30394237) locates only one copy in collections worldwide - at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. ~RCL~ [3.5P] Twelve magnificent color reproductions of paintings from the Edo period (1600-1868), when many cultural activities and pastimes which had formerly been the special province of the nobility or samurai class spread to the merchant and commoner classes. In the realm of art, folding screen and hanging scroll paintings were disseminated much more widely than before and enjoyed by a wider stratum of Japanese society. The 12 paintings gathered here fall into the broad category of kichijo-ga, or 'paintings on auspecious subjects.' The taste of the patricians is reflected in the noble, graceful paintings by Tosa school painters: Outdoor Curtain, Flower Wagons, Hawk, and Bugaku Dancers. The stylish urban spirit of the commoners is conveyed in the works of Korin and later painters of the Rimpa school represented here by Sagicho, Flower Dolls, Mount Horai, Portraits of the Thirty-Six Poetic Geniuses, and Bamboo in Snow. Such fine works of art, while exhibiting the aesthetic sense of the artists, reflect traditional Japanese concepts of elements in nature which are especially auspicious. Pine, bamboo, and plum, for example, have long been considered a trio of auspicious plants and displayed on felicitous occasions. Cranes are admired for their elegant appearance and, along with the tortoise, regarded as a symbol of longevity. Similarly, the carp is known for its strength and perseverance, and the hawk for its fearlessness. Seller Inventory # RCL-1132-14061
