About this Item

Matatia Bat Sheva, Yakov Ben Gershon Bak and Messer Franceco de le Donne, Small folio. Midrash Tanchuma that is called Yelamdeinu on the Pentateuch - with the elucidation of foreign words. Very few books were printed in Verona at the end of the 16th century and they are all rare. Midrash Tanchuma is among the rarest of them. Midrashic homilies to the Pentateuch. Attributed to Tanchuma bar Abba. Printer's device on f.86r and on recto of final leaf. The Tanchuma-Yelamdenu Midrashic cycle is one of the earliest collections of homilies wherein the Halacha is conjoined to the Agada. Commencing with questions of Halachic matter the discussion whereupon turns to Agada and homiletic interpretation. The name given to the work refers to the numerous homiletic interpretations quoted in the name of Tanchuma, the son of Abba, a Palestinian agadist who lived towards the end of the fourth century. The second name, Yelamdeinu, arises from the large number of homilies open with the formula Yelamdeinu Rabbeinu (May our master teach us). Damage to right margin and bottom left corner of the decorative border of title page (with no text loss) expertly repaired. The spine of the old binding has been expertly repaired.
