A stereoview from John Wesley Powell's 1871-72 second expedition on the Colorado River. There is no photographer information listed. Photographers on Powell s second expedition were E.O. Beaman (taking photos from Green River, Wyoming to Lee's Ferry, Arizona), James Fennemore (taking photos in Glen and Grand Canyons in 1872), John K. Hillers (taking photos from Lee's Ferry and below, 1872) and Walter Clement 'Clem' Powell (unknown but possibly Kanab area) (NAU, Cline Library). Mount measures 4 ½ x 7 inches and has "Marble Canon" and "U. S. Topographical and Geological Survey of the Colorado River of the West by J. W. Powell and A. H. Thompson" printed on front. Published by J. F. Jarvis with his label on verso. Title label on verso reads "Scene on the River. No. 134". Mount has moderate soiling and wear to edges. Photograph has moderate soiling. Overall good condition. Scene in Marble Canyon on the Colorado River. The image shows two boats tied to shore; the boat in the background is the Emma Dean, a sleek 16 foot pine boat on which Powell tied a sturdy armchair to the middle bulkhead; the other boat has a large star painted on its bow. ; 4 1/2" x 7".
