Document to appoint an Attorney for the sale of half of his schooner Jane. Matthew McNair, from Paisley, Scotland, came to Oswego, New York in 1802 when he found only two frame buildings in the town. He then became a ship owner and investor in Oswego, and served on many town committees. By 1804 McNair had built the first Oswego shipyard on the river just south of Schuyler Street, and he was in the freight forwarding business. He had an impressive fleet, and it is likely that he also engaged in some smuggling into Canadian ports, principally Kingston. Seller Inventory # 001455
