FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 9.5 x 7 inches. x + 128 pp. Bound in original maroon cloth, with black titles, in pictorial dust wrapper, which has edge wear with chips at head and tail of spine and damp stains on inside rear wrapper. Extremities a little worn and damp stains on rear board. Occasional light foxing and a few pencil marks in margin, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 9 black and white plates, including frontispiece and one folding at end with key opposite and by line drawings in text. Decorated by title page vignette. First edition of a standard work on Shakespearian costume for the theatre stage and the cinema screen. It was completely revised in 1970. It is based on the costume of the period 1560-1620 and is very well illustrated from period sources. By the costume historian, Francis Michael Kelly (1879-1945).
