8vo. 5.25 x 6.25 inches. viii + 306 pp. Separate half title for the Discourse, but pagination and register continuous. p.157 signed L7 and 8 and p.159-60 omitted as stated by ESTC. Bound in original calf; spine rebacked with raised bands decorated gilt, with contrasting maroon morocco title label, gilt. A little wear to extremities and some browning and occasional spotting of text, but otherwise a very good copy. The greater part of the work prints thirteen sermons preached at Lincoln's Inn, 1766-1773 (two further volumes of his sermons were published by 1780), followed by the Discourse on Christ driving the Buyers and Sellers out of the Temple. Richard Hurd (1720-1808) was educated at Cambridge and ordained Priest 1744. He was appointed Preacher at Lincoln's Inn in 1765, Bishop of Lichfield and Coventry in 1775 and translated to the see of Worcester, 1781. His collected works were published in eight volumes in 1811.
