4to. 7.5 x 5.25 inches. 192 + 16 pp. publisher's list. Bound in original maroon cloth, gilt, with black borders on front board enclosing black title. A little wear to extremities, including corners and head and tail of spine, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 104 text figures, including frontispiece of model head and by table. Standard textbook by the two leading proponents of American phrenology, the brothers, Orson Squire (1809-87) and Lorenzo Niles (1811-96), first published in 1849. Adding some US moral idealism and the virtues of temperance etc. to the practice of British phrenology, they had established centres in New York and Philadelphia in the late 1830s. Lorenzo later set up an institute in England, from which the characteristic ceramic heads could be obtained. This edition of the book was revised by US phrenologist, Nelson Sizer (1812-97). Phrenology, the measurement of the cranium to determine personality traits, is now regarded as an unproven pseudoscience, somewhat discredited by past links to criminology and scientific racism.
