Stunningly illustrated, slipcased edition of Edward Fitzgerald's English translations of the classic verse by the "astronomer poet of Persia." This De Luxe hardcover edition has beige cloth-covered boards with an intricate red/green/gilt decoration to the front & spine. It comes enclosed in a burgundy slipcase with an incredible front paper paste down illustration by Edmund Dulac, who also provided the Frontispiece & 11 richly colored internal illustrations. In 197 pages with decorative yellow endpapers, including a Biographical Preface (uncredited) & the complete texts of the First, Second, and Fifth translations, as well as Variations in the Third Edition. The FIRST PRINTING of this edition (First, Thus) from 1937, this hardcover octavo is in Near Fine condition in a VG- slipcase, which is downgraded due to fading on back & slight splitting at bottom edge of opening. The book's binding strong & straight, pages creamy white & unmarked, all plates have clean white margins. A lovely copy in gorgeous condition, & collectible for Dulac's hauntingly beautiful illustrations alone!
