About this Item
Small 8vo, hardback. pp. 336. Text originally in French, translated here into English. Travel journal of Dr. Yvan, 'physician of the scientific mission sent by France to China, etc.', through which he documents his travels across Brazil, Borneo and Tenerife, among other destinations. The text draws on many contemporaneous socio-political themes, such as colonialism and the slave trade. Includes preface from the translator and extensive appendix, in which Coleridge's 'The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner' is recounted. Contains six plates illustrating scenes from his travels, typically with an accompanying quote, e.g. 'the lava will not advance so rapidly' alongside frontispiece depiction of Mont Tremblant, Canada. Some light foxing throughout the book and written inscription present on the title page. Original binding, with spine slightly loose at the seams and natural signs of age on cover and page edges. Overall very good condition for a book of its age. Seller Inventory # 036243
