Blue cloth w/gilt lettering, lovely red, white and black cover illustration of a child standing in front of a fire. Shelfwear head and heel, moderate general scuffing, corners lightly bumped. Hinge broken at title page. Some thumb smudging throughout. Previous owner signature to front endpaper, no other marks. Translated by Mary L. Watkins. Loti's "somewhat fictionalized recollection of his childhood. Viaud's pseudonym is said to refer to his extreme shyness and reserve in early life, which made his comrades call him after "le Loti" (lotus), an Indian flower which allegedly loves to blush unseen.
