About this Item
The First UK Trade printing of this illustrated edition published by Gay and Bird, London in 1900. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. Original blue boards with some light markings. Some pushing and rubbing to the spine ends and corners. Gilt spine lettering and decorations to the front board. Printed endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Previous penned owner's name to the front and rear end papers. Some moderate offsetting and spotting to the prelims. Lighter spotting internally in places. The frontispiece and 5 sepia plates by Herbert Cole, with captioned tissue-guards are all present and clean. Additionally, Cole has provided B/W headers and tailpieces. Herbert Cole (1867-1930) provided artwork for numerous books in the Edwardian era, with his illustrations showing the influence of Walter Crane, Edward Burne-Jones and the pre-Raphaelites.
