Item varii aliorum discursus politici de regno Angliae, Sir Thomas Smith, Ex Officina Elzerviriana, 1641, illustrated title, 428 pp plus index, original double ruled leather, 4.75 x 2.5 , 48mo. In fair condition. Front board detached. Staining and dampness marks to surface of boards. Loss of tail and head with significant loss to tail. Binding exposed. Gilt compartments remain bright and clean. Slight rubbing to surface of leather. Lovely stamps on each corner of boards. Old auction catalog tag adhered to pastedown. Armorial bookplate of Thomas Preston on pastedown with the motto Lucem Spero Clariorem . Preston was a British army captain who was put on trial after the Boston Massacre. Ex-libris of Luther Brewer on fly, obscured by fold. Internally good with light toning and minor instances of foxing. Some light age staining in the margins. Small tear to rear index leaves. Binding intact. Please see photos. Sir Thomas Smith 1513-1577], wrote this important while he was ambassador to France. It describes the constitution of England under Elizabeth I in a way that indicates tendencies toward republican ideals.
