About this Item
Before Florida was "The Sunshine State", South Dakota claimed the nickname. We offer here Vol. VI, No. 5 of an illustrated periodical dedicated to marketing South Dakota as "The Sunshine State". Opportunities for outdoor recreation are prominently featured, and the publication makes sure to include plenty of photographs of the naturally beautiful and rugged surroundings. The contents include articles, poetry, and letters to the editor, evenly split in subject between local history and tourism/recreation. There are two articles detailing local Native American history, including one about Sacagawea and another titled "Some Facts on the Indians". Includes full-page advertisement for the "Days of '76", a Gold Rush-theme festival in Deadwood described as "A Historical Reproduction of Life as it Really was . Stage Hold-Ups, Killings, Indian Dances, Attacks by the Red Men, Soldier Drills, Ancient and Modern Mining Methods, a Monster Parade, Two Days with a pageant on the Third morning, Collection of Relics, Gambling and Dance Halls, Vaudeville Acts and Fireworks in the Evening - all for One Dollar" (p. 10). Folio (11.75" by 8.75"), pp. 68, with in-text illustrations. Stapled in original illustrated wrappers. Seller Inventory # 22000674
