Raphael Soyer (1899-1987) was a Russian-born American painter and printmaker of the Social Realist movement whose subjects included men and women, often solitary, in their natural context and environment, be it the streets, subways, offices, or studios of New York. With a warm presentation inscription from the author, Sylvan Cole, Jr. (1918-2005), the "internationally recognized art dealer who helped foster the explosion of printmaking and print collecting in the United States in the decades after World War II" (New York Times, June 5, 2005).
