About this Item
Hardcover, 316 pages, ENG edition, 320 x 300 mm, NEW, illustrated in colour / b/w. ISBN 9782850889509. Mark Rothko (1903-1970), originally called Markus Rothkowitz, was an American painter and representative of abstract expressionism, more specifically the so-called color field painting. His artistic work in the 1930s was influenced by the work of Milton Avery and Henri Matisse with simplified compositions and color areas, after which he sought connections with the surrealist movement. Around 1947 he broke with surrealism and turned to abstraction. His canvases contain, on a uniformly colored ground, two or three rectangles in different colors, varying in width or height, but rarely both at the same time. The saturated colors with floating and expansive shapes invite a sensitive, tactile experience, giving the viewer a creative role. Rothko strove for a universal language that appeals to everyone, far away from intellectualization and technical creation processes. His later works in the years fifties and sixties became increasingly gloomy in color. 2410 g. Seller Inventory # 62643
