About this Item
[solid copy, one-time owner's pencil signature on ffep; the book is only lightly shelfworn, but some insect (or something) has nibbled away about a two-inch strip at the bottom fore-edge of the rear cover; the jacket is similarly nibbled in the same area (the rear foldover) and additionally has a few small edge-tears, although it's still attractive -- and if you leave the now-protect jacket in place you'll hardly notice the damage to either it or the book]. Novel about the three Skeffington sisters, native New Yorkers, "from the gas lighted nineties to the liquor-lit present." The book presents the successive "comings-out" of the three girls (back when that connoted a society event, not a sexual revelation), placed against the dual backdrops of a changing city -- specifically their once-genteel midtown Manhattan neighborhood (between 46th Street and Central Park) -- and the sinking fortunes of the Skeffington family during that period. (It's worth noting -- well, I think so, anyway -- that the book has no relationship to the 1944 Warner Bros. film MR. SKEFFINGTON.) NOISBN. Seller Inventory # 18001
