About this Item
John Murray, London, 1822, volume XXVII comprising numbers LIII, April 1822, and LIV, July 1822; 8vo, pp [vi], 568; half contemporary calf, marbled sides, spine panelled gilt; some light rubbing in places, occasional slight foxing or other marking but overall in very good, firm and clean condition; simple episcopal bookplate with the initials T. L. C. on the front pastedown. . . . The periodicals offers essays and comment on politics and literature and reviews recently published books. There's an extended essay of around 18pp drawing on four then recently published books about visiting, touring, evaluating, observing and settling in the United States variously between 1817 and 1820. A further trilogy of books are reviewed, these covering the war between the UK and the nascent US as well as the British campaigns in Canada. There's a review of a book by the Surveyor General of Van Diemens Land looking at the geography, history and topography of the colony and with particular reference to land use and availability. Ethiopia is visited and discussed as is Central Asia as well as domestic politics, art, architecture and literature. And in a somewhat modern note there's comment on six recently published works variously looking at contagion, plague, pestilence, small-pox and medical advice and opinion. Each number ends with a list of new publications and there's also an index to the volume. Seller Inventory # 001026
