About this Item
Complete in all original matching white vellum bindings (see first image), and stitched with vellum hide strips (see Image 2), duodecimo 8 x 14 x 8 cms. Tomus 1: 1658. 234 pages., Tomus 11. 1659. 356 pages + 10 pp Index. Tomus Tertius: 1661. 365 pages. Three Title Pages showing "Reverse C" printer's use for the Roman date numeral MDC (see third image). This set particularly interesting as Volume 2 has five pages of dense contemporay manuscript in Latin on the rear blanks (see images 4 & 5). We are not Latin scholars and so we suggest that there is an interesting research opportunity here. More information on request with pleasure. [Elzevir is the name of the celebrated family of Dutch booksellers, publishers, and printers of the 17th and early 18th centuries. The duodecimo series of "Elzevirs" have become very famous and very desirable among bibliophiles. Although it appears the family was involved with the book trade as early as the 16th century, it is only known for its work in some detail beginning with Lodewijk Elzevir (also called Louis). The family ceased printing in 1712. All three volumes offered here show the famous Elsevir "Tree" printers trademark, as can be clearly seen in our second Image]. (P.S. Those of you of a Latin disposition can have our almost complete Transcription of the Annotated pages. A good example to tempt you is ".Tenuis inventa reperta. In plerusque Antique cod. sequebatur vox ES unde magna inter duos grammateos Laurentum vallum. & Alex ab Alex exorta controversia est priore afferente inventore. Deci de re perquisita at repente de re oblate. Destinae contrariam omnino affirma. Inter?.acer in nomen? defendit, rugis armatus. Authores uterque secum famates Laudat. Hic fuisse? A potes compline? To make it more difficult, there appears to be some old Greek miixed in). Seller Inventory # 006690
