Circa 1885 - but not later, as the CPR's "Algoma" ran aground and broke in half off Greenstone Island, near Isle Royale, on 7 November 1885 - the same day the CPR's last spike was being driven at Craigellachie. LAC has a copy of this rare Buell image with the typed caption "C.P.R. Str. Algoma and Quebec at dock, Port Arthur" on the verso. Port Arthur has since merged with Fort William to create Thunder Bay, Ontario. Buell is famously known as the photographer of both the Riel Rebellion (North-West Rebellion) and Louis Riel's trial for treason in 1885. An albumen silver photograph (4.5 x 7.75 inches) mounted onto a maroon colored, beveled-edge boudoir card (5.25 x 8.5 inches), bearing Buell's imprint in the lower recto margin. Buell photographs are very scarce, and although Buell may have occasionally produced some of his images for commercial purposes, this one is stamped in gilt "Compliments of Prof. Buell" on the card.
