The Principles of Ethics, Volumes I and II by Herbert Spencer.Hardback: volume 1 - 1904, second thousand, 572 pages + xviii; volume 2 - 1900, third thousand, 503 pages + viii; both published by Williams and Norgate, London. These books form volumes IX and X of the larger 'A System of Synthetic Philosophy' set.Octavo/8vo, measures around 8 7/8" by 6" by 1 3/4" (vol. 1) and 1 1/2" (vol. 2). Dark brown cloth binding with faux leather texture, embossed detail to boards with crest to front boards (gilt has faded from crest), gilt lettering to spine. Some marking and scuffing to binding, heavily scuffed and discoloured patch to base of rear board of vol. 1 but books are quite clean and colouring still generally vivid. Signs of wear, rubbing at edges and on hinges, a little tearing at upper and lower spine edges. Vol. 2 has slight forward tilt. Bumped corners. Some slackness and strain to bindings, some wear to hinges and a some cracking to front inner hinge of vol. 1 but contents of both books reasonably firm. Page edges browned, scuffed and a bit marked with slight foxing. Some marking to endpapers. Both books contain underlining, marginalia, and written notes throughout, along with occasional marks.
