First printed in 1685 the book is in two parts, the first being an amusing poem, the second being a ' much more serious and important linguistic work on Yorkshire dialect'. According to linguist Martyn Wakelin, Meritons work is still of' the utmost value to our knowledge of late 17 th century northern phonology '.
