A striking mezzotint portrait of one of the most important American political figures of the 1800s in an issue of a Whig publication. Webster was a highly regarded courtroom lawyer who influenced key Supreme Court cases that established important constitutional precedents; he was a leading proponent of stimulating the economy by means of protective tariffs. He served as Secretary of State and opposed the war of 1812. Disbound, complete issue for September 1850, pp 483-578; mezzotint portrait of Daniel Webster from a daguerreotype by John Whipple; and article, pp483-504.
