About this Item
Numbered 138 in ink on first leaf; the print run was only 200 copies making the book quite scarce. 138 p. 19 cm. 9 b&w plates. Grey card covers with silver print. Tape residue on rear cover, chipped lower spine, ink inscription on a front endpaper, a few pencil or ink marks. Describes the founding of the town, its development, harbour, railroads, churches and schools, industry, some pioneer families, early local tragedies. Port Hope's relatively slow growth from 1881 to 1951 resulted in much of the town's original architecture not being demolished in the name of progress and its downtown is now celebrated as the best-preserved 19th-century streetscape in Ontario. Some of the old buildings are included in these plates. Seller Inventory # 123969
